PowerPoint Karaoke

PowerPoint Karaoke

The 11/24 Timbertalkers meeting is going to a be a special event, a PowerPoint Karaoke contest. Instead of watching each other sing (badly), we are all going to work on our hot-seat speaking skills in a PowerPoint Karakoke contest; speakers are given a random set of slides and have to improvise a speech.

Rules

The rules for the Timbertalkers PowerPoint Karaoke are based loosely on standard Toastmasters contest rules. The format is consistent with the PowerPoint(r) Karaoke 2009 contest rules. All decisions by the meeting Toastmaster are final. Have fun!

Eligibility

Unlike Toastmaster's contests, anyone is eligible; both members and guests may participate. Contestants must sign-in before the start of the contest. Registration closes when the first speaker starts. There will be time available for up to 10 speakers.

Slide decks

  1. Slide decks will be prepared ahead of time by Toastmaster. Each deck covers one topic and will have 5 to 15 slides. These are real presentations and the topics vary from technical to funny.
  2. Presenter order is assigned at random
  3. Slide decks are assigned at random. The speaker may redraw after all others if the first deck is unacceptable.
  4. Each speaker receives a handout with their slides 3 minutes before start time. All of the slides do not have to be used. Just as in "Table Topics," the speaker is free to follow the slide topic or not as desired.

Timing

Speeches will be 3 minutes long. The green card will be shown at 2:30, yellow at 3 minutes, and red at 3:30. Anyone going over 4 minutes will be disqualified from the Timbertalkers contest.

Video

All presenters will be video recorded. With the presenter's permission their video will be uploaded to Youtube. The presenter may then enter the PPTK 2009 tournament online using that video if desired.

Judges

There will be several judges using a modified Table Topics contest ballot. The Judges will be looking for:
  • Speech Development - beginning, middle, conclusion
  • Presentation skills - how well were slides used
  • Use of Language
  • Effectiveness - voice, gestures

Prizes

There will be prizes for best overall, funniest presentation, and anothre for the best use of slides.
